More Than Dope

November 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So what do you do when you can’t find the time to write in your blog?  You start another blog.  Consider this the official launch of More Than Dope, my new blog which deals with all things dope.  For my old heads don’t worry, I’m not talking about dope, I’m talking about dope [I have never messed with dope, not even once... don't even take aspirin or drink coffee... see kids it can be done!]

I was finding it harder and harder to place a list of hot songs next to a hard-hitting post on the effect of racism on the Presidential contest.  I want to talk about both things but not in the same place… at least, not anymore.  So I will use MTD to publish posts on fresh stuff I come across, DJ sets [mine and some from other DJ's], videos, guest author posts and other light-hearted fare.  So if you are a DJ or artist looking for a little shine, hit me up… if you have something to say [on the light side] and want an outlet, let a brotha know… if you know about some hot product or event, drop me a line.  I can’t say I will run every single thing but if I think it’s dope it will go on the blog.

So there you have it… check it out when you have a chance… we can’t be angry all the time [I told y'all I was feeling different!]

The Coolest One

November 11, 2008 · 2 Comments

It was a small thing but did y’all see President-elect Barack Obama descending from the plane in D.C. yesterday?  Folks, we have entered a new era in more ways than one… this dude came off the plane like the coolest dude on earth.  He was on some James Bond-vibe.  Dude… uh, President Dude… umm, Mr. President-elect Dude came off the plane in shades.  I’ve never seen a president in shades… in any country.  Swag was overflowing when he approached the motorcade… he was moving like he needed a theme song ["no one in the hemisphere got swagga like us..."].  I don’t usually jock cats like this but it was something to see.  (more…)

10 Questions for “Post-Racial” America

November 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

So what do we do now?  Where to place all this excitement?  We know our country is different now but none of us are quite sure exactly where the changes will appear.  Example, I was at the polls about to vote and ABC showed up and started interviewing a few folks in line… Dude came up to me and asked a couple of basic questions, I lobbed up a couple of basic answers and he starts to move on.  The old White lady in front of me turns to me and Anthony Johnson, the reporter, and says, “That was a really good interview!”  Word?!  It was no big deal.  Is this part of the change?  Are White folks going to be overly nice just in case ? [Maybe he does know that Obama dude... can't be too careful!]  Will they feel like they need to get their house in order? [like cats finding religion in the hospital or on death row.]  (more…)

The 44th President of the United States of America

November 4, 2008 · 3 Comments

Communist

Socialist

Terrorist

That One

Unpatriotic

Naive

Celebrity

Barack Obama is the President of the United States of America.  It will take some time and reflection to put that sentence into full consciousness.  A Black man… with a middle eastern-sounding name… the product of an interracial union.  A political newcomer.   A neophyte who overcame two of the most powerful names in U.S. political history.  This is the way it had to happen… this is the time it had to happen… this is the person to make it happen.

Two years ago we did not think this outcome was possible.  Twenty years ago we had a Black nominee for President but his candidacy was seen as largely symbolic.  Two hundred years ago this country had just stopped the sanctioned slave trade.  Two months from now we will swear in a Black President.  Two hundred years from now this moment will still be acknowledged.

This election is transitional but the Barack Obama administration has the potential to be transformational.  It’s all there… we are poised to change the fundamental relationship many citizens have with this country.  We have the potential to engage tens of millions of people who have always been here but were “passing through”… disconnected from the country… left out of the dream… unaccounted for in the halls of power… below the threshold of representation.   (more…)
