Past Imperfect

I had the pleasure of watching David Paterson deliver his address to the legislature after being sworn in as the 55th Governor of New York State.  In many ways it was the best political speech I’ve seen.  He was not trying make a name or raise his stature as Clinton and Obama famously did.  He wasn’t trying to weave some elaborate tale as almost every politician attempts to do on the way into office.  He simply let folks know who he is and what he is going to do… immediately.

So The Wire joins the other game-changing, genre-breaking HBO series in the boneyard.  I didn’t love the last season but that has more to do with how high the bar was raised in previous seasons of the show.  But, even during this last season, they were still spot on with their portrayal of the media, the dope game, local law enforcement and city politics… it’s just that the last few shows felt like… television [hey, I thought this was HBO!].  I know that’s all it was but because they did it so much better than most I expected it to always operate on the high wire.  I wanted every show to draw me in like this stuff was happening outside my window [well outside a window several towns over... got to keep it real].  (more…)
