In news sure to bring shock to some and awe to others, DJ Star is bringing his Star & Buc Wild Show back to the morning airwaves in the tri-state. His new show will debut on the just barely on the FM spectrum, 87.7 FM. They will presumably get some bigger Duracell batteries or a bigger rat for the wheel or something to pump up their signal. Pulse 87 is scheduled to switch to a Top 40 format on January 12 which will coincide with Star’s first show… in case you’re wondering they currently air Russian ethnic programming [I think I hear some material in there]. Ain’t That Peculiar

I’m not sure how I feel about this story. It hits on a bunch of levels but there is a certain irony to it. To paraphrase Chris Rock, I’m not saying it’s okay but I understand.
Seems a teacher from England went to Sudan and thought it would be a great idea for her students to name her Teddy Bear. The 7 year olds, in the this heavily Muslim country, decided on Mohammed and she wrote the name on the bear. One problem, Muslims are highly offended and insulted by inappropriate references to their Prophet… one of the parents told. Sh*t got thick in a hurry. The story got all international and folks all over England are bunched up. Why? (more…)

Black Is Still Beautiful

I miss the vibe we used to have. That “Black is Beautiful” vibe… that “Say It Loud (I’m Black and I’m Proud)” vibe. I liked calling a Black man or woman [or boy or girl] that I didn’t know “brother” or “sister” as a term of endearment. Those were terms of endearment that didn’t require an explanation; they also conveyed a feeling. There was a feeling of sameness and oneness when I encountered folks who looked like me. I know it wasn’t a perfect time - heroin had a grip on too many of our people and opportunities were few and came grudgingly – but there was a sense of “we’re in this together”. I was fairly young during most of this period but that vibe made a lasting impression. (more…)
